Pizza Sauce From Scratch
Pizza Sauce From Scratch is a simple 15 minute recipe that makes pizza night SO MUCH tastier. Combining sautéed onions and garlic with diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and just the right seasonings makes this the secret sauce for all future pizza parties! Absolutely delicious!
The key to tastier food is homemade sauces, dressings, and seasonings. I swear by my Homemade Enchilada Sauce, my Easy Homemade Marinara Sauce, and my Homemade Basil Pesto Sauce to name just a few. There is also my most recent sauce – Homemade Barbecue Sauce Recipe!
Homemade Pizza Sauce
This recipe comes just in time for my pizza series. I’m sharing one new recipe a month because I want you to have choices when it comes to your very own pizza parties at home. Here are a few for you to try so far.
- Taco Pizza Recipe – The first one in the series!
- Skillet Pesto Tomato Pizza – An oldie but a goodie.
- Homemade French Bread Pizza – My most recent obsession.
You’ll of course need a homemade crust unless you can nab one from a local pizza shop. My simple homemade pizza dough makes the best crust, hands down. It’s also easy to make and can be ready to use in a little over an hour!
Ingredients Needed
Most of these are simple, pantry staple ingredients. I keep these on hand at all times! Don’t hesitate to add more red pepper flakes for a super spicy sauce or leave it out together if that’s not your jam. 😀
- Olive Oil – Use 1-2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil to sauté the veggies.
- Onion and Garlic – For additional flavor.
- Diced Tomatoes – I always use fire-roasted tomatoes (or even salsa-style if you can find it). The added heat adds a little bit of spice but not too much.
- Tomato Paste – For a more bolder tomato flavor.
- Seasonings – Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes (optional, for more heat), kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper.
- Sugar – Just a pinch to balance the acidity of the tomatoes.
How to make Pizza Sauce From Scratch
- Sauté veggies. In a sauce pan over medium-high heat, add olive oil and diced onions. Sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Then add garlic and stir for 30 seconds or so.
- Add remaining ingredients. Add the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and seasonings, and simmer for about 10 minutes or so.
- Blend. You can choose to puree the sauce in a blender or leave it chunky style. That’s up to how you like your sauce! (See the pictures below.)
Storing and Freezing Pizza Sauce
- Storing – Store this sauce in an airtight container in your refrigerator for up to two weeks.
- Freezing – Freeze pizza sauce in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to two months. To use, set in refrigerator for a day to thaw or use your microwave on a defrost setting.
Chunky or Smooth Sauce
You can leave the sauce chunky or puree it in your blender for a smooth sauce. Either one works!

Pizza + Ice Cream Party
No that I’ve shared all the pizza party recipes, it’s time to talk about the ice cream. In addition to a new pizza recipe each month, I’m sharing a new ice cream recipe too. Take a look at the list of ice cream recipes SO FAR and choose which one you’ll make for your pizza and ice cream party!
You can adjust all of these recipes to make it work for whatever size ice cream maker you own!
- Mint Chip Ice Cream
- Blueberry Ice Cream
- Or others before I started the series, like Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream, Creamy Peanut Butter Ice Cream, Cookies and Cream Ice Cream, Double Chocolate Ice Cream, and Very Berry Strawberry Ice Cream
