Sloppy Joe Bowls

Sloppy Joe Bowls are a hearty, deconstructed take on the classic sandwich, featuring seasoned ground beef in a tangy tomato-based sauce served over a base of baked potato wedges. These bowls are simple to make and will be a hit with the whole family!

Best Sloppy Joe Bowls

While we love a big messy sloppy Joe, we also like to eat it in bowl form with a fork. No bun, but add roasted potato wedges and dig right in! You’ll avoid the slop on that crisp white shirt too.

These bowls combine two of our recipes – a saucy meat mixture (without the spiciness of sriracha) and garlic home fries. Plus we’re adding some dill pickles AND our favorite pickled onions. Feel free to customize these bowls to your liking.

How to make Sloppy Joe Bowls:

Step 1
Prep potatoes and onions. Wash potatoes, and slice in short wedges. Slice the onions into rings. Place potatoes and onions in a mixing bowl.

Step 2
Add oil and seasonings. Drizzle the olive oil over the potatoes and onions and mix well. Add the seasonings and stir again. Arrange all on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Step 3
Bake potatoes. Bake potatoes in a 425-degree preheated oven for 15 minutes. Remove pan and gently flip the potatoes. Add the minced garlic to the potatoes and bake again until fork tender, approximately 15 minutes.

Step 4
Brown beef. Meanwhile, heat a large cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add olive oil and add diced onions, bell peppers, ground beef, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Cook until the beef is browned and cooked through, using a spatula to break up the beef. Stir frequently.

Step 5
Add ingredients to beef. Then add the yellow mustard, ketchup, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, and brown sugar. Stir well and reduce heat to a simmer. Cook an additional 15-20 minutes, adding water as needed to moisten.

Step 6
Assemble bowls. To four serving bowls, arrange ingredients – the roasted potato wedges and onions, and the sloppy Joe mixture. Top with pickled onions and dill pickles.

Step 7
Serve Sloppy Joe Bowls. Serve bowls as a complete meal or with sides of your choosing.

What to make serve with Sloppy Joe Bowls:

We like adding a small side salad to this meal. Try one of our homemade dressings – Honey Balsamic Vinaigrette, Creamy Italian Dressing, or Spinach Salad Dressing.

You may want something chocolate for dessert. How about our Chocolate Chip Cupcakes, Chocolate Caramel Bars, or Slutty Brownies?

Recipe FAQs:

What kind of meat is best for sloppy Joe bowls?

Ground beef is classic, but you can also use ground turkey, chicken, or plant-based crumbles for a lighter option.

How long should I simmer the meat mixture?

About 10–15 minutes, or until it thickens and the flavors meld.

What kind of base can I use for the bowls?

Instead of a combo of roasted sweet potatoes and russet potatoes, you could try some mashed potatoes, cauliflower rice, or quinoa.

Other Delicious Bowl Recipes:

We’re huge fans of bowl recipes – a little bit of this and a little bit of that. One of my favorite ways to eat because everyone at the dinner table can customize their meal.
