Best Jalapeño Poppers
Y’all. These jalapeño poppers have been a staple in our home for a long while now. Great for football season, basketball season, baseball season, or just ANY DAY of the week. They are always a huge hit with our group and makes a perfect party appetizer.
Why This Recipe Works:
- QUICK and EASY. Prepping takes a mere 10 minutes, and then just 25 minutes (or less) to bake.
- TASTY. Such a good combo of the spicy jalapeño, the creamy filling, and the salty bacon. A perfect combination for your next party.
- SPICY. Take these up a notch and leave some seeds in for a spice KICK. Or leave them out for a less spice.
- Ummm…BACON! Enough said. The thinly sliced bacon is the way to go.
Make-ahead tip: These jalapeños poppers are a great make-ahead snack! You can assemble the stuffed jalapeños the day before and bake right before serving.
What You’ll Need:
Simple ingredients that can be found in most grocery stores.
- Fresh Jalapeño Peppers – If you use extra large jalapeños, keep in mind that you’ll likely need more of the cheesy filling.
- Cream Cheese – Key to the cheesy goodness of these poppers.
- Cheddar Cheese – I normally use sharp cheddar but any mixture of cheese if fine here.
- Seasonings – Salt to taste and a pinch of garlic powder and red pepper flakes (optional).
- Bacon – I recommend using thinly sliced bacon, not thick-cut bacon. It will crisp up better in the oven.
How to make Jalapeño Poppers:
Step 1
Prep. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Cover a baking sheet with some aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top.
Step 2
Prep the jalapeños (using gloves!). Clean and halve them. Remove seeds if desired.
Step 3
Make filling. To a medium bowl, combine the cream cheese, cheddar cheese, garlic powder, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Use a hand mixer to blend until creamy.
Step 4
Fill peppers and wrap. Spoon the filling into the halved jalapeños. Wrap a slice of bacon around each pepper half and secure with a toothpick. Place poppers on the prepared baking tray.
A note on the bacon. I often par-cook the bacon to ensure that these are crispy. If par-cooking, I recommend baking it and watching closely to avoid over-cooking. You want the bacon to still be pliable enough to wrap around the stuffed jalapeños.
Step 5
Bake. If using raw bacon, bake the jalapeño poppers in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the bacon is crisp to your liking. If using par-cooked bacon, you’ll only need about 10-15 minutes in the oven.
Step 6
Serve. Serve these hot or at room temperature. The best part is EATING them!
Recipe FAQs
Use thin bacon for these poppers. Since we’re baking these, thin bacon works better than thick bacon. It cooks up faster and crisps nicer.
The seeds inside a jalapeño are spicy. Wearing gloves will protect your eyes if you happen to touch them when making anything with jalapeño seeds.
These will last in the refrigerator for up to four days stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Yes, you can freeze jalapeño poppers. The easiest way is to let them cool completely, lay flat to freeze for about an hour, and then add the delicious poppers to a freezer bag.
All About Jalapeños:
- Some jalapeños are hotter than others. Boy, do I know this fact. I’ve used jalapeños SO much in my cooking since moving to Texas, and while I sincerely love them, spicy jalapeños can betray even a spice lover like me.
- I love this explanation by Elise Bauer, “The older the pepper, and the more stress the plant has been under, the more white lines you’ll see, and the hotter the pepper will be. The smoother the pepper, the younger, less stressed, and milder it is.“
Super Bowl Sunday is around the corner. I’m ready with ALL of the snacks. A few healthy ones and a few splurges, because life is all about balance.
