Limoncello Moscow Mules

I love a good classic drink, but I also like to put a spin on it once in a while. I recently tried some homemade limoncello at a local Italian restaurant and knew I needed to add it to one of our favorite classic drinks – the Moscow mule.

This version is a spin on the traditional mule. You also may want to try our Strawberry Mexican Mules.

Ingredients Used:

  • Limoncello – An Italian lemon liqueur made from the zest of lemons, sugar, water, and alcohol. You can make your own, or buy it like I did.
  • Vodka – Moscow mules normally contain vodka as the main source of alcohol.
  • Lime Juice – Like most of our cocktails, these require a squeeze of fresh lime juice.
  • Ginger Beer – There are several brands of ginger beer, but we prefer Fever-Tree.
  • Lemon Slices – For serving, of course.
  • Ice Cubes – You’ll need lots of ice to make these nice and cold.

Optional: If you like your drinks on the sweeter side, make a batch of simple syrup and store it in the refrigerator for cocktail hour.

Recipe FAQs:

What is a Moscow mule?

A traditional Moscow mule combines vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice. It is normally served in a copper mug to keep the drink super cold.

Can I use store-bought Limoncello or should I make my own?

You can use store-bought Limoncello for convenience, but if you prefer homemade, there are many recipes available online.

What’s the ratio of vodka to Limoncello in a Limoncello Mule?

A common ratio is 1 part vodka to 1 part Limoncello (like I used in this recipe), but you can adjust it according to your taste.

Can I use fresh lemon juice instead of lime juice?

Yes, you can but I recommend adding simple syrup if using lemons because it will be extra tart.

Can I make limoncello mules ahead of time?

You can mix the vodka, Limoncello, and lime juice ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, simply pour over ice and top with ginger beer.

What glasses do you recommend for a classic Moscow mule?

We occasionally use copper cups, insulated Yeti cups, or regular glasses of any kind.

Notes

  • Tips for making THE BEST Limoncello Moscow Mules at home.
    1. The vodka. Use a good quality vodka. We like Kettle One and Absolute. If you use a cheap version, the taste will suffer.
    2. The Ginger Beer. Again, use a good quality. We always the light version of Fever-Tree
    3. The Limoncello. Don’t buy cheap!
    4. ALWAYS use fresh lime juice. This is important.
    5. Fresh lemon wedges. Gotta make it pretty.
    6. Ice. I like to use our cocktail shaker for these to get the drinks nice and cold.
    7. Simple Syrup. Use this if you like your drinks on the sweeter side. Just combine equal parts sugar to water (start with one cup of each), and bring to boil in small saucepan. Cook until sugar is dissolved. Remove and cool in refrigerator well in advance.
    8. You can also prepare in advance by making sure everything is nice and cold. Sometimes I put the liquors and the lemon juice in the refrigerate pre-party time.
    9. If using simple syrup, start with an ounce per mug. You can always add more.
