Garlic Butter with Chives
Garlic Butter with Chives is a condiment that combines the rich, savory taste of butter with the robust flavors of garlic and the subtle onion-like notes of fresh chives. This delicious blend adds a burst of savory goodness to dishes, whether melted over grilled meats, tossed with pasta, or spread on crusty bread.
Why This Recipe Works:
- SIMPLE – This simple recipe uses just four ingredients – butter, garlic, chives, and salt.
- DELICIOUS CONDIMENT – This condiment adds amazing flavor to so many dishes, including bread, veggies, pasta, and meat.
- CUSTOMIZABLE – Instead of adding garlic and chives, try other fresh herbs or lemon zest. Try using roasted garlic cloves or sea salt.
- PERFECT FOR STEAKS – We make this garlic butter mostly for steaks.
What You’ll Need:
Just four simple ingredients in this homemade butter.
- Butter – You’ll need one stick (or a half cup) of unsalted butter for this simple recipe.
- Fresh Garlic – Use as much garlic as you like. I used a couple of medium-sized cloves and finely minced them.
- Chives – We prefer fresh chives in this. Dice them pretty small.
- Kosher Salt – We add about 3/4 of a teaspoon of salt.
How to make Garlic Chive Butter:
Step 1
Let butter rest. Place the unsalted butter on your counter until it comes to room temperature.
Step 2
Mix ingredients. Then add the other ingredients to the softened butter – minced garlic, diced chives, and kosher salt. Use a hand mixer to combine the ingredients until very well mixed.
Step 3
Form a log. Place the butter on some cling wrap and squeeze it into a log shape.
Step 4
Chill. Roll the garlic butter up in the wrap. Chill in the refrigerator for a couple of hours.
Step 5
Serve. To serve, spread it on bread for garlic bread (or even dinner rolls), use it as a flavorful base for sautéed vegetables and/or pasta, or melt it over grilled meats for added richness and flavor.

Storing and Freezing:
STORE garlic butter in your refrigerator for 7-10 days.
FREEZE compound herb butter to extend its shelf life for several months. When you’re ready to use it, simply take out the desired portion and let it thaw in the refrigerator. This process helps preserve the flavors of the herbs and spices in the butter.
Recipe FAQs:
While fresh garlic cloves provide the best flavor, pre-minced garlic is a convenient alternative.
You should use unsalted butter and add salt as needed. This will allow you to control the salt content.
